ABOUT THE RECALLS
A number of Lexus models have been recalled for front passenger airbag inflators that were manufactured by Takata corporation.
Lexus Australia takes the safety of our customers seriously and we are working hard to rectify all vehicles affected by the faulty Takata airbag inflators.
We sincerely apologise for any inconvenience caused to customers caused by the Takata airbag recalls.
What is the defect with the airbags?
The propellant in inflators in the Takata airbags subject to the recall may degrade after prolonged exposure to high absolute humidity and fluctuating high temperatures. Degraded propellant can cause inflator rupture during airbag deployment. In the event of an inflator rupture, metal fragments could pass through the airbag cushion material, striking the vehicle occupants, and result in serious injury or death.
Is my Lexus affected?
As part of the recall process, Lexus Australia notifies registered owners of affected vehicles by mail.
Affected vehicles are determined by the Vehicle Identification Number (VIN). In addition to the information available at lexus.com.au, a full list of all vehicles affected by the Takata airbag recall in Australia is available on the Recalls Australia website.

Which Lexus vehicles are involved?
Active Takata airbag recalls
In the Australian market, as of 30 April 2018 approximately 25,217 Lexus vehicles are involved in the current active Takata airbag recalls.
Please refer to the table here for vehicles fitted with Takata airbag inflators (Alpha or Beta) subject to active recall.
Future Takata airbag recalls
The Takata recalls affect approximately 100 million vehicles globally across many manufacturers. Lexus Australia are prioritising vehicle rectification based on the location and age of the inflator and parts availability. Vehicles subject to future recall and the recall initiation dates are listed here.
You can check the status of your specific vehicle by searching for your vehicle and VIN number at the Product Safety Australia website.
If your vehicle is subject to a future Takata recall, the vehicle has a faulty Takata airbag inflator which, depending on its age and other factors, will pose a risk of serious injury or death in the future.
Lexus will contact all guests directly at the time of active recall initiation so it is important your contact details are up to date. Please contact the Lexus Customer Assistance Centre on 1800 023 009 (8.00am to 6.00pm, Monday to Friday) to update your contact details or if you have any questions.
What is the inflator?
When will replacement parts be available?
We have sufficient parts to support passenger's side airbag replacements based on current demand, with further parts scheduled for delivery.
How long does replacement take?
Most Takata airbag repairs take up to four hours. However, depending upon the Dealer's work schedule, it may be necessary to make a vehicle available for a longer period of time. All Takata airbag repairs are completed free of charge to the vehicle owner.
Under certain special circumstances (for example, if there is an affected vehicle in a remote location or to assist customers who are elderly, infirm or disabled), loan vehicle or special repair arrangements will be made available upon request. In addition, in all cases, a loan vehicle or alternate transportation arrangements will be made available upon request if a vehicle is required to be left at a dealership for more than 24 hours to replace the airbag.
What has Lexus done to contact owners?
Lexus Australia has been notifying, and responding to, owners of affected Lexus vehicles in a number of ways (including by mail, phone, SMS and email, and will be also be commencing face to face visits). Lexus Australia urges owners to take the following action:
- if the vehicle is fitted with an 'alpha' type Takata affected airbag: to immediately stop driving the vehicle and call a Lexus Dealer to organise towing (free of charge) to have the airbag inflator replaced. Alternatively, subject to safe work location requirements, an on-site repair may be completed.
- If the vehicle is fitted with a 'beta' type Takata affected airbag: to urgently contact a local/preferred Lexus Dealer to arrange repair.
Lexus Dealers will arrange any required towing of alpha affected vehicles and all rectification will be performed free of charge and to minimise inconvenience to the vehicle owner.
